The critter tied me up for Halloween proper, so apologies for this being a day late. But what I lack in timeliness, I try to make up for in reading, viewing, and listening material. So, here’s the whole shebang of what I wrote in honor of Guided By Voices’ leader Bob Pollard’s birthday a couple of autumn’s back, plus a pair of interview features with the birthday boy himself I wrote for the Boston Phoenix and RollingStone.com back in the day. Just add two to his age and you’re good to go (even if he has released about a dozen albums since then)!
RPM: Jonathan Perry's Life in Analog
A Pollard-worthy collage of covers and more
Birthday Boy Bob: This photo was apparently taken during the seven seconds in between the time he wrote his last and next song, chugged six beers, and delivered a scissor kick onstage.
Another collage: “Go Ahead It’s Good For You” (so is listening to copious amounts of GBV!)
Another collage cover for one of Bob’s “imagined” albums and EPs. I love this guy!
“Good For The Inner Ear” collage (Yes, GBV is!); taken from Pollard’s “Town of Mirrors”
“Mod Rocket”: One of my favorite examples of one of Bob’s many cool collages he regularly compiles into his self-published “EAT” periodical of art, poems, stories, and lyrics.
“Random Nonsensical Fun Page”: The title of my original Bob Pollard collage, purchased at a charity auction designed to raise funds for a battered women’s shelter in Dayton, Ohio.
Early GBV publicity shot, mid-90s. Bob expects a chilly reception…
